FF Meta Book — 12 Thumbnails
Format: Paper, 7.5” x 10”
Genre: Perfect bound book
Winter 2023

In this project, I created a multi-page perfect bound book based upon a single, sans serif font, the one chosen being FF Meta. With this project being created in my first Typography class, there was no shortage of playing around with different methods, both physical and digital, to see what worked. Ideations in this book range from simple to complex, exploring the many quirks that FF Meta is made up of, including its unique curvatures and slanted crossbars.

When I began this project, I first researched FF Meta, writing a short summary of my findings of its conception, history, and its use today. I then created hand drawn ideations using a pen and paper, figuring out basicstructures and composition within several 1 x 1 inch squares. Later on, I moved to InDesign, where I had the freedom to scale letterforms as well as split apart or combine letters into their own shapes, without compromising the effects of FF Meta’s style. I concluded the book with 12 thumbnails which explored the simplicity and geometry of FF Meta’s system whilst adding in snippets of my previous research strategically into the composition whereas to be informative but not overbearing.

Ultimately this project taught me how the breaking down of letterforms to their most simple shapes can lead to an emphasis of minuscule details of typefaces that often go unnoticed if used on a page with a multitude of other words.
