For this project, I was assigned a Michigan event which I then had to research and design a poster based around it. This poster is based on the Grand Haven Kite Festival, an event bringing kite experts and enthusiasts to the beaches of Lake Michigan for a few days every summer. I went through several variations for this poster, as I had many different ideas for how it could look. I tried a halftone look as well as a collage look, but ultimately decided to combine both by designing the kites with fabric textures and overlaying the entire composition with a pastel effect that gave a slight sunbleached effect. For my typefaces, after doing research on some existing posters, I found a poster including beautifully made “Grand Haven” type. This poster overall portrays the vastness of Michigan’s shorelines as well as a colorful array of kites flying high above.
