Thinking with Type — Images + Type

Winter 2023

As the next step to using FF Meta, this project involved combining Thinking with Type with several different colored images. To kick off this project, the task was to take photos of any typography in our environment. We were encouraged to get creative and look for type in areas we wouldn’t normally look, such as mechanical signage as well as general typography hidden in plain sight across the CCS campus. After collecting photos, I then had to decide how these photos would be placed inside the book, without looking like they were copied/pasted. So I began to play more with an idea I had been having throughout the class, which was to cut up the image into a block-like configuration, one which worked in a system that connected each page to the next. I used a similar methodology with my sections of type that either fit in the segments where the image would’ve been, or framing the blank areas surrounding the image to create negative space. Overall, this third book helped me to get an understanding of combining images in a spread and how they work with typography, especially when adding color as another special element.
