Title Sequence — Lost in Translation

Format: Digital Video
Genre: Title Sequence
Winter 2024

In this partner project I completed with Morgan Guerrieri, our job was to either create or recreate a title sequence for a movie. After we decided on and watched Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, we began our first task of creating the aesthetic. Since the movie is centered in Tokyo, we had looked to the city and especially nightlife for inspiration.  We quickly decided on a bokeh look, resembling the busy city skyline at night. Since the story revolves around two people finding a connection in an unfamiliar place, we used two larger bokeh dots to represent Bob and Charolette, the two lovers in the movie. Through our storyboards and animatics, we imagined these dots alone as telling the story, with both of them starting out far from each other and finding one another and growing closer, and two their eventual parting at the end. They dance around with other dots in the distance, yet the focus is primarily on them. We see their relationship begin to blossom more as the sequence evolves, with the cooler tones giving way to warmer hues, hinting at the growing bond between our two protagonists. Overall I very much enjoyed this project, and how we were able to experiment using methods we had never tried before to create exactly what we wanted.
